Images of Asunción

The Plaza of the Heroes - a tribute to the Paraguayan soldiers and the many wars fought. This is an interesting place filled with history and guarded by soldiers in traditional uniform.

Looking at Asunción from the top of the former palace of the Legislature - now an art museum.

Shopping at the Petterossi Market is a treat. These flowers are representative of the many blooms we saw daily on trees and bushes - in the middle of the Paraguayan winter!

This is a Surubi, a fish caught in the Paraguay River. Rose is a bit shocked by the size. The Petterossi Market is the place to go for fresh meat.

Paraguayans drink Maté constantly and the water they use to make this tea is often boiled with various herbs to keep them healthy. We are getting a lesson in what herbs are used for specific ailments from one of the venders in the Petterossi Market.

Paraguay gained it's independence from Spain in the early 1800's. This is the house where the leaders met to plan the revolution. The owner of the house had beautiful daughters and the gatherings were under the guise of courtship. The process of gaining independence was peaceful and this house is preserved for us to see today.

We enjoyed a cruise on the Paraguay river one afternoon.

The children danced the Macarena as we cruised the Asuncion shoreline.

The river provides homes for many Paraguayans.

If you look closely, you will see a herd of pigs foraging for garbage along the river bank.

The Paraguayan navy. Not bad for a land locked country.

The Paraguayan navy at "sea". Look closely, the sailors are saluting our boat.

Looking down from the government buildings that line the river, you find the Chacerita, a village filled with humanity living on the flood plain.
